OK so I don't like horror but I am intrigued by this offering by writer/director Phillip Ridley for two reasons, well three if you count the cast.
Firstly it's Philip Ridley whom I know more for his plays than his films (I saw his latest, Moonfleece which included a Q&A with the man himself just two nights ago). He has a bit of a reputation in the theatre-world for writing plays which some might describe as shocking but I prefer to think of it more as challenging in that it provokes a reaction beyond the norm, and I like that.
Secondly the story is a classic: man sells his soul or signs some sort of pact with the devil. And I'm curious to see Ridley's treatment of it as someone who tends to favour contemporary themes and issues. It makes me confident it will be a thriller/horror that has a bit more depth than the sort of gore-fest that I normally associate with the horror genre.
And thirdly, it's got a great British cast which includes the likes of Timothy Spall, Eddie Marsan, Noel Clarke and a particular favourite of mine, Jim Sturgess.
Definitely one on the list for next month when it is released.
